A variation is the English tea cake called a Victoria sandwich.

El Salvador Food Recipe Ingredients

    Flour -- 1 1/2 cups

    Baking powder -- 1 teaspoon

    Unsalted butter, room temperature -- 1 cup

    Sugar -- 1 1/4 cups

    Orange, zest only -- 1 tablespoon

    Vanilla -- 1 teaspoon

    Eggs, room temperature -- 6

    Orange juice -- 1/4 cup

    Orange marmalade -- 1 cup

    Powdered sugar -- 1/3 cup

El Salvador Food Recipe Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans. Sift the flour and baking powder together in a large bowl.
Place the butter and sugar together in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat on medium-high speed until fluffy and light, about 3-5 minutes. Add the orange zest and vanilla and beat for another 15 seconds or so.
With mixer at medium speed, add one egg at a time, incorporating each egg before adding the next.
Reduce mixer speed to medium-low. Add the flour in three parts, alternating with the orange juice and beating just until smooth. Don't overbeat.
Spoon the batter in equal parts into the three cake pans. Bake for about 25 minutes. Remove cakes and cool completely.
Mix the marmalade with a little water and stir until it is almost pourable. Spread half the marmalade over one of the layers. Place the next layer on top and spread with the other half of the marmalade. Top with the last layer. Sprinkle the cake with powdered sugar by shaking it through a sieve...enjoy the El Salvador cake !
El-Salvador-food recipes: quesadilla-salvadorena

Quesadilla Salvadorena

Quesadilla Salvadorena
...try this famous El Salvador food recipe....amazing !

El Salvador Food Recipes Ingredients :

1 Cup Flour

1 Cup Sugar

1 Cup Sour Cream

4 oz Parmesan Cheese (grated)

3 eggs

1 stick butter (small)

1 Teaspoon Baking Powder

Sesame Seeds

EL SALVADOR FOOD RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS
Mix butter and sugar until creamy.
Add eggs one at the time.
Sift flour and Baking powder.
Add to sugar mixture little by little.
Add sour cream, parmesan cheese mixing well.
Grease spring pan or baking dish with butter.
Add mixture evenly.
Decorate with sesame seeds.
Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 40 to 60 minutes.
The El Salvador food recipe is ready to serve...great taste ! Preparing the curtido: In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, carrots, onion, vinegar, water, oregano, chile flakes, red bell pepper, and salt until well mixed. Transfer to a glass or plastic
1-gallon jar. Secure with the lid and agitate to mix well. Let marinate at least 1 day. Makes 1 gallon. This mixture will keep up to 1 month in the refrigerator.
2. Preparing meat for filling: In a small pot, combine the pork with water to cover by 2 inches and salt to season. Bring to a rapid simmer. Partially cover and cook until the pork is tender and the water has almost evaporated, about 40 minutes. Uncover; reduce the heat to very low and let the pork fry in its own fat until golden. Remove from the heat.

3. Simmering the filling: Put the tomatoes, onion, oregano, black pepper, and cloves in a blender container. Puree until smooth. Pour the blender contents into the saucepan with the pork. Place over medium heat, stirring the puree with a wooden spoon to loosen bits of browned pork on the bottom of the pot. Remove from the heat and, using 2 forks, shred the meat. Bring the mixture to a boil again. Lower the heat and cook uncover over medium heat for 10 minutes, or until thickened.
4. Finishing the filling: Place the potato in a small pot with water to cover. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, 20 to 30 minutes. Remove from the heat, drain, and peel. Mash the potato or press it through a sieve. In a bowl, combine the pork mixture with 1/2 to 3/4 cup of the mashed potato; mix thoroughly. Makes about 4 cups filling.
5. Forming and cooking pupusas: Mix the masa with the oil until very soft. Form into 25 small balls and cover with a damp cloth. Pat each ball with the palms of your hand until flattened. Place a generous tablespoon of meat mixture in the center of each round. Carefully enclose the filling by pressing the edges of the masa up over the filling. Press the edges of masa together to seal the ball. Lightly pat the masa ball (with enclosed filling) until flattened to 3/8-inch thickness. Place the pupusas on a heated greased grilled; cook until speckled brown. Turn once and continue coocking until speckled and puffed. Remove; top with curtido and serve.
The El Salvador food recipe is ready to serve...enjoy it !

El Salvador Food Recipe-Tamales de Elote

El Salvador Food Recipe-Tamales de Elote
A nice El Salvador food recipe to try !
El Salvador Food Recipe Ingredients :

* Corn husks for wrapping -- 12-15 each
* Lard -- 1/4 cup
* Butter, softened -- 1/4 cup
* Baking powder -- 2 teaspoons
* Masa harina -- 2 cups
* Warm water -- 1 cup
* Salt -- 2 teaspoons
* Corn on the cob -- 2-3 ears

El Salvador Food Recipe Instructions

1. Add the cornhusks to a large pot. Pour boiling water over them and let them soak for at least 30 minutes to make them pliable.
2. Add the lard, butter and baking powder to a food processor or mixer and beat until until light and fluffy.
3. Cut enough corn kernels off the cobs to make about 2 cups. Scrape the cobs with a knife to get all their milk.
Add the corn kernels and their milk to the food processor and pulse until fairly smooth but still a little chunky.
4. In a large bowl, mix together the masa harina, salt and warm water and knead to form a pliable mass. Pulse a little bit at a time into the corn and lard mixture until smooth.
5. Drain the cornhusks and wipe dry. Lay out a husk with the pointed end up and add about 1/4 cup dough to the center. Fold in each side to cover the dough. Then fold up the bottom of the husk. Finally fold down the pointed top and insert it into the bottom to make a package. Tie the tamal with string if needed. Repeat with the rest of the dough.
6. In a large bowl, mix together the masa harina and water and knead well. Knead in more water, one tablespoonful at a time if needed, to make a moist, yet firm dough. (It should not crack at the edges when you press down on it.)
Cover and set aside to rest for 5 to 10 minutes.
2. Roll the dough into a log and cut it into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.
3. Press an indentation in each ball with your thumb. Put about 1 tablespoon of desired filling into each indentation and fold the dough over to completely enclose it. Press the ball out with your palms to form a disc, taking care that that the filling doesn't spill out.
4. Line a tortilla press with plastic and press out each ball to about 5-6 inches wide and about 1/4-inch thick.
If you don't have a tortilla press, place the dough between two pieces of plastic wrap or wax paper and roll it out with a rolling pin.
5. Heat an ungreased skillet over medium-high flame. Cook each pupusa for about 1-2 minutes on each side, until lightly browned and blistered. Remove to a plate and hold warm until all pupusas are done. Serve with curtido and salsa roja. The El Salvador food recipe of Pupusas is ready to serve....great ! Enjoy it !

Variations

* Pupusas de Queso: With a cheese filling. Use grated quesillo, queso fresco, farmer's cheese, mozzarella, Swiss

cheese or a combination. Add some minced green chile if you like.
* Pupusas de Chicharrones: With a filling of fried chopped pork and a little tomato sauce. A reasonable facsimile can be made by pulsing 1 cup of cooked bacon with a little bit of tomato sauce in a food processor.
* Pupusas de Frijoles Refritos: With a refried bean filling.
* Pupusas Revueltas: Use a mixture of chicharrones, cheese and refried beans.
* Pupusas de Queso y Loroco: With a cheese and tropical vine flower filling. Loroco can be found in jars at many

Latin markets.
* Pupusas de Arroz: A variety of pupusa that uses rice flour instead of corn masa.
* Cooked potatoes or finely minced, sautéed jalapeño peppers are also tasty fillings. Try a mixture of different fillings.
* The above recipe uses masa harina, a special dried cornmeal flour used in making tortillas, tamales, etc. If you are able to get fresh masa, definitely use it instead. The flavor will be much fresher. Just substitute the masa harina and water with fresh masa. One pound will make about 4-6 pupusas depending on size.

Notes

* The pupusa is so fundamental to the cuisine of El Salvador that the country has even declared November 13th "National Pupusa Day."
El Salvador recipe-atol-de-elote.

El Salvador Food Recipe-Atol de Elote

El Salvador Food Recipe-Atol de Elote
El Salvador Food Recipe INGREDIENTS

* Yellow corn on the cob -- 6 to 7 ears
* Water -- 4 cups
* Sugar -- 1/3 cup, or to taste
* Salt -- 1/2 teaspoon
* Cornstarch (optional) -- 3 to 4 teaspoons
* Ground cinnamon -- for garnishing
El Salvador Food Recipe INSTRUCTIONS

1. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut enough kernels off the corn cobs to make 3 to 3 1/2 cups. Then scrape the cobs with a knife to remove all their milk. Place 2 1/2 cups of the corn in a blender along with 2 cups of the water and puree well.
2. Strain the pureed corn through a sieve into a medium saucepan and discard the solids. Stir in the remaining corn kernels, 1/3 cup sugar and salt.
3. Bring the liquid to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, or until lightly thickened. If the atol doesn't thicken to a creamy consistency, mix the cornstarch with a little cold water and whisk into the simmering liquid until it is just thick enough to coat a spoon.
4. Pour the hot atol into mugs or small bowls, sprinkle with a little cinnamon and serve hot with a spoon to scoop up the corn kernels.
The El salvador food recipes is ready to serve...enjoy !
arroz-con-leche.

Salvadoran Pupusas with Curtido

Salvadoran Pupusas with Curtido
A nice El Salvador Food Recipe to try !
Ingredients for :

Curtido (pickled cabbage)

1 medium cabbage, shredded

2 carrots, shredded

1 small red onion, sliced thin

4 cups cider vinegar

4 cups water

1 tablespoon dried oregano leaves, crushed

2 teaspoons crushed red chile flakes

1 red bell pepper or 4 ajies dulces (sweet red peppers), sliced thin

1 tablespoon salt

Pork and Potato Filling

3 pounds pork butt, trimmed and cut

into small pieces

1 teaspoon salt

1 pound tomatoes (about 3 medium)

1/2 small white onion, sliced

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves

1/4 teaspoon gound black pepper

3 whole cloves

1 large russet

Corn Dough

4 pounds masa (freshly ground corn dough) 1 cup vegetable oil

Additionnal comment:
El Salvador's most popular food snack is similar to a thick corn tortilla stuffed with cheese, or in this version, pork and potatoes. Top the hot pupusas with curtido, a colorful pickled vegetable mixture of cabbage, carrots, and onion.

Serving tip:
For a party hors d'oeuvres, prepare miniature 2-1/4 inch pupusas up to 1 week ahead and freeze. Heat thawed pupusas in a 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes, or until heated through. Serve hot.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preparing the curtido: In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, carrots, onion, vinegar, water, oregano, chile flakes, red bell pepper, and salt until well mixed. Transfer to a glass or plastic 1-gallon jar.
